About
My making is guided by a meditation on change and temporality. I process my emotions through my body and clay, and as I sculpt, my hands bring permanence and tangibility to fleeting feelings.
Both my forms and functional ware encourage physical interaction and tactile exploration. I aim to instill the same wonder and curiosity in my audience that I experience in response to natural patterns and rock formations.
I am deeply inspired by geological weathering and the phenomenal power of ephemeral forces like wind and water to shape unmalleable solids over time. I draw parallels between the fragility of life, relationships, and social structures, along with the fluidity of my identity as I create my own labyrinths and monuments, reminiscent of those in nature.
Raised in Livingston, Montana, Kade HB has been devoted to artmaking since age 14. He received formal training in oil painting and life drawing at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts in Paros, Greece before pursuing an undergraduate degree in Studio Art at St. Olaf College. In the summers between, Kade maintained his artistic practice by attending local life drawing sessions, completing portrait commissions, painting en-plein-air around his hometown and places he traveled, and working as a production potter.
His passion for painting and installation art has extended into his theatrical work; Kade worked in the St Olaf Theater scenic shop from 2018-2022 and has assisted in designing multiple production sets at St. Olaf and in Livingston, MT at the Shane Lalani Center for the Arts. In 2023, Kade independently designed and functioned as the lead scenic artist for a full-scale production at St. Olaf under the Anna K. Bonde Apprenticeship Award.
After taking his first ceramics course in 2020, clay quickly became his primary medium. Kade was awarded a year-long Emerging Artist residency at St. Olaf College after graduating with the highest honors in 2022. Throughout his residency, Kade also served as St. Olaf’s interim ceramics technician. Presently, Kade is studying ceramics at Indiana University Southeast as a post-baccalaureate student and has work in several juried shows across the country.
